Microterroir: Introducing the 2017 Higgins Vineyard Estate Reserve Pinot Noir

05 Jul Microterroir: Introducing the 2017 Higgins Vineyard Estate Reserve Pinot Noir

Last spring, we released the first of  four Estate Reserve Single Vineyard series wines from the 2017 vintage.  These wines are something that Tom began to dream about as he learned more about our land with each passing vintage.  Each wine is crafted from grapes grown on our limestone-laden estate vineyard.  The vineyard has four distinct soil, bedrock, and topographic combinations, and the wines reflect the nuances of each “terroir” or sense of place.

2017 Higgins Vineyard Pinot Noir – grown in a vineyard featuring a vein of dolomitic limestone

We are excited to release the next wine from this series: the 2017 Higgins Vineyard Estate Reserve Pinot Noir. The Higgins Vineyard is centrally located on the north side of the Estate vineyard.  The vineyard has a moderate slope and Ontario silt loam soils.   In addition to the calcium carbonate that underpins the entire estate, this vineyard features a unique vein of dolomitic limestone which was formed millions of years ago when sedimentary limestone was exposed to magnesium-rich ground water.  This is a small production wine which we released to our wine club last year and this week, we are opening up a limited release of five cases.

We are grateful to share an in-depth exploration of the terroir of our estate vineyard with you!
